Someone's Missing

Last night we went to Grandma’s house
To play, laugh, eat and open presents
There was something missing,
The extra joy that should have been present
The smile and laughter that would make everyone cheer.

Kids are running around and getting balloons
But there is something missing, the giggle that came along
No one on the pool table, doing a spin
No one saying, come look and see what I found
That extra laughter is missing from one loved so dear.

Grandma hollers “come on lets pray”
No the one who reminds us isn’t here today
The prayer is spoken wishing love for those missing
Time to eat the food from deep preparation
Yet there’s a plate at the table that is missing.

It’s time to play games
Someone is playing in your spot
There’s the little red head
And his hair not as dark
For you to be here is what we are wishing.

Presents are being opened
All opening and enjoying
That person who got more joy
Out of what others received
His physical presence is what’s missing

Home we all tread on to go
Realizing no presents for him
Will be wrapped and placed under the tree
For him that is in our hearts
But won’t be here living.

Morning comes along and we open our eyes
All to remember you won’t be jumping in
To yell “Santa came lets go”
No, we won’t be able to say lets snuggle
And listen for the train whistle to blow,
Before we feel the giving.

Up from bed we arise with coffee in hand
Then up to the cold and frozen place
To tell you we still care
In hearts the hole is still there
For ever it is you we will all be missing.
